The mediator functions as a neutral impartial person who is skilled in a wide variety of processes that might enhance resolution.

The mediator will:
• Listen to complaints and problems without criticism;
• Help to open communication channels between parties;
• Serve as a feedback mechanism;
• Obtain explanations of policies and procedures; and
• Explore and facilitate options for resolving concerns.

The mediator does not:
• Provide legal advice;
• Search for blame;
• Make judgments regarding who is right or wrong;
• Act as a therapist; or
• Have authority to compel or impose settlement.
